I don’t like social networking.

This may sounds silly coming out of the mouth of a blogger, though I’m hardly the diehard post-a-day variety. But it’s true, I don’t like social networking. I let my Facebook sit inactive for months (as Adreanna can tell you, it gets a little heated on there at times, what with all my friends wondering whether or not I’ve died).

I feel like there’s something very low energy and very low effort about Facebook, while at the same time being very invasive. And it creates an obligation of return. So what Facebook does to my friendships is reduce them down to two lines of text at a time, which I don’t have to put any thought or energy into, a very surface level of friendship, but it obligates me to update this veneer several times a week – if not several times a day. As though I am not really interested in the friendship unless I send a cheesy animated flower. I don’t like this.

It’s why I like blogs and emailing. They tend to be deeper and more intense, more introspective and encourage more actual discussion of real life and topics that matter. So sue me, I like to think about things and share insights with likeminded people. And I like to occasionally discuss topics I don’t want to share with everyone I’ve known since I was two, every person who’s ever attended a church with my parents, and every one of my distant relatives I may or may not have actually met. Facebook does not lend itself to this, either depth of communication nor the sharing of personal facts.

I also do not Twitter (Tweet? I don’t know, I’m not in the know, I don’t Tweeter).

Which comes straight to the point of the post…. I’m starting to feel bitter toward Twitter (ooh rhyming), because I feel like it’s fragmenting the discussions that used to go on around the blogosphere. So many bloggers use Twitter these days that the post ideas that circulate, often go round on Twitter, so a non Tweeterer doesn’t get the message until the topic is stale.

I feel like sometimes to follow a single discussion I have to follow it in multiple media? Eek! Call me a luddite, I hate to have my discussions squeezed into 100-something character snippets or fragmented across twelve different spheres of conversation. My life is abbrieviated and fragmented enough, thank you.

This isn’t really a complaint or accusation, just a personal whine I’ve been meaning to get off my chest. It’s frightening that at 26 years old, I’ve already become a crabby old woman who won’t keep up with the latest means of communication because it’s scary and new. But there it is.

I'm SOOO with you! Let's start a club for the anti-twittering lonely bloggers out there! I can't help thinking the twitter stuff hurts the quality of the blogosphere a bit. I wrote a post about my doubts back in april and I haven't really changed my mind about it. http://www.pinkpigtailinn.com/2009/04/twitter-and
I'm glad I'm not the only one. And as you'll see from the comments there are a couple of bloggers who are with us, although the majority obviously have moved their interaction and discussion to twitter, which I really think is a pity.

I just really don't know what can be said in that few characters. :(

I remember that post, actually! I almost mentioned in mine that you didn't even use a feed reader!

I agree with this too, actually. The whole social networking thing kind of drives me nuts in that there is an obligation on my behalf by virtue of my participating in it. It's like my iPhone… I love my iPhone, I love it for all of the wondrous things it does for me, organizes my life, keeps in contact, shows me my calendar, etc. etc. What I DON'T like about it and makes me want to throw it out of the window is when people seem to think that because I have a cell phone it automatically implies that I'm immediately available via one of many ways of contacting me.

If I access this technology, it's cause I chose to, and reserve the right to unchoose to at any moment. ;)

I totally agree with you too, Adam. I feel the same way about my cellphone. Last spring, I had a pretty big fight with my roommate because I refused to take her call when I was out on a semi-formal date. Nael and I were at a nice restaurant spending our last weekend together before a two month separation, and she was upset that I chose not to take her call… Eww. Just because I have a cell phone doesn't mean that I am accessible 24 hours a day. It means that in an emergency, I can call a tow truck!

I'm an incredible luddite. Seriously, it's a wonder I play WoW I'm such a luddite =P. I loathe Twitter – I mean, what's worthwhile that can be said in a sentence? All these fragmentary ideas seem so meaningless to me. Y'know I may, in fact, have got the ripe old age of 26 of … err … not having a mobile phone. It's a struggle, let me tell you, and people complain about it all the time but actually they manage to get in touch with me when they want to and the pay off is I don't have this social obligation to be constantly available to people. Woot. I do very little social networking to be honest. I have a facebook account but I never use it and the rest of stuff … gah .. just goes over my head.

I am old. The kids need to stop social networking on my lawn.

You can use Twitter without actually having to send any messages. I rarely actually send anything on Twitter, I mostly just use it to watch. For example, Vork from the Guild has an in-character Twitter account that he posts to sometimes, which is funny to see. I follow the Ghost Hunters, the Barenaked Ladies, CNN Breaking News. Greg Grunberg, between tweeting ads for his Yowza iPhone app puts up some very funny comments and pictures. The Doctor Who News Page puts their site updates on twitter, as well, which I follow. WoW.com hosts the occasional giveaway on there. All things that have nothing to do with talking to friends. Not to mention it makes logging onto this site to make comments easier. :)

haha, Fobok, Aurdon's a dedicated twitter-er, so I'm not surprised he's incorporated it into the commenting login system. He holds the reins on things like that, not me. :)

I do have to say, seeing tweets from Vork would be hilarious. And I do like to keep up with the Doctor Who news… *ponders* Something to think about.

I’m a Twitt.

I do use it to sort out thoughts and gain post inspiration, but never as a replacement for a blog post.

Twitter is the compost that fertillizes my garden

Eww. Do you know what's in compost? :P

I am so very glad you don't use it as a blogging replacement.

I SO know and agree with what you are saying! I've recently deactivated my Facebook account, which came to my friends as a great shock because I was an active user. They've actually initiated a group to try to get me to come back *rolls eyes* I had an aggregate of reasons for doing so, one of the front runners being that I realized how one-dimensional it turned some of my friendships into, and that I needed to refrain from wasting time looking up people that I don't actually care about. To be honest, I *kinda* miss Facebook… just cause I left more than a few friends hanging… also I miss updating my photo albums lolzz…
I've never been associated with Twitter. I think Twitter is a waste of words, frankly.
I've given a thought about blogging, but then I see all the millions of blogs out there and I wonder, who would even have time or want to read my blog? I'd much rather write in a personal diary than post something on the internet and secretly hope that people are reading it without commenting.
While we are on the topic of Facebook and Twitter, here are some things that might entertain you:
