Weekly Raid Quests…

by on October 13, 2009

Just noting quickly something I dug up in the most recent set of PTR patch notes, since I haven’t seen it anywhere else yet:

Weekly raid quests are now available from Archmage Lan’dalock in Dalaran. Every Tuesday at 3 AM the Council of Six will choose a different strategic target that must die from either: The Obsidian Sanctum, Naxxramas, The Eye of Eternity, Ulduar, Trial of the Crusader, or Icecrown Citadel.

The raid version of the daily heroic is coming soon. Seems like kind of an obvious change. It’s a potentially rewarding way to get people running Naxx (and other original WOTLK raids) again, and an interesting way of encouraging people to PuG raids. Will raiding guilds make an attempt to run the weekly, even if it’s not something they’re working on? Maybe. I think it’s likely that at least some guilds will keep their scheduled times for things they’d be running anyway and just free up their members to PuG whatever the weekly is if it’s not on the normal menu.

Probably won’t help puggers who don’t have fancy-pants achievements to link, as we’re already usually excluded even from daily heroic runs with gearsnots, but at least there’d be more PuGs going to Naxx. Haven’t seen too many lately.

What do you all think about Weekly Raid Quests?

From what I saw of the list of bosses that will be targets of the weekly raid quest, they’ll all either be: a) Single(ish) Boss Raids (Sarth, Maly) or b) At least be veeeerrry early bosses, (FL, Anub’Rekhan, etc etc) so doing the entire raid to get the weekly done would not be that difficult.

In fact, depending on what the weekly is, in a rather amusing twist of fate, depending on how long it takes to get the group together, you can probably do the weekly raid quest *faster* than the daily heroic. :P

Aww, I didn't see the list. That's silly and trivialises the whole point of what I hoped they were trying to do.

That isn't even the worst part. The reward for the weekly quest is reported to be 10 (yes, TEN) Emblems of Frost, presumably the tier-10 badges.

Admittedly they have to make the reward a little aggressive since it can only be obtained once a week, but this seems just a bit much!

Ho. Ly. Crap.

I'm all in favor of accessible, since I'm so far behind the curve I can't even see the curve anymore… but seriously, if that's true it's getting to the point where accessible has been abandoned in favor of throwaway.

When a person who's never set foot in a raid – well technically I think my mage has the achievement for AQ20, but that doesn't count – thinks it's overkill, things have gotten kind of extreme.

Aye, 10 tokens for the week. Also, all heroics and existing raids will start dropping Triumph emblems rather than Conquest.

Honestly though, I'm not at all miffed or put out by these changes. Accessability is good. Find your raiding priest is dropping out of the game and don't have a replacement? But have the odd DPS sitting out week after week that either has a healer alt or the inclination to get one? Well, now there is an awesome way of bringing them up to speed without having to drag the rest of the group down for so long.

I don't /care/ that people who have never set foot in a raid will be able to get better gear. It will simply mean on the odd times that I need to pug the heroic daily or whatnot, that the group can run that much smoother. Even if they're retards behind the characters. :P

When it comes to raiding, you can pour all the gear you want onto someone, and it won't make them a better raider necessarily, if their problem is for instance, 'standing in the bad'. They'll still die. They just might do marginally more before faceplanting. So I know that in the raiding arena, even if some newb or alt has near the same gear as me, unless they're actually GOOD as well, it doesn't actually matter.

You took me the wrong way, I think… I *AM* the person who's never set foot in a raid. Yep, I'm running behind, and who knows if I'll ever get caught up?

But even to me the whole thing is starting to feel like one big boost through deadmines. I don't know. Maybe I'm casual in reality, but hardcore in my head or something. Or maybe I'll feel different when I get there.

I got what you were saying, and it's fine. Everyone is of course entitled to their own view and opinion. It's just my opinion that it's OK to do this. When they start giving out T10 token drops from heroic bosses? Ok. Then we might need to sit some Blizz Devs down. :P

But from what I can tell, the 10 frost emblems per week from the weekly raid kill are going to be the only way for a non raider to get these emblems. MAYBE Heroic Daily quests will upgrade from Triumph to Frost as well, in which case, ok, there's another potential 2 / day, but even at a rate of 24 per week (10 from weekly, 14 from doing h daily, every day of the week) that's still going to take a reasonable while to amass any amount of T10 equivalent gear.

The point is though, is that it'd be /possible/. And in the mean time, the Triumph emblems would let you get T9 gear, which should certainly be enough to catch people up and into gear for running T10 content without being dragged through it overmuch.

Well when you do the rough math on it…
3 badges of triumph per ToC boss = 15 for the run x 4 possible runs (ToC 10, ToC 25, ToGC 10, ToGC 25)
Two runs through Vault (Koralon the Flame Watcher) should yield another 4 badges
Onyxia = another 6 for 10 and 25man runs
Heroic dailies = another 14 badges a week….

As of right now, players can get 84 badges a week. Do they? No….you'd have to be clearing ToGC 25 man every week to push that number but I wouldn't think it would be too hard for well progressed raiding guilds to get 60+

So for guilds that raid alot? These 10 extra badges will be nice for the nights when not enough ppl show for heroic modes. I'm wondering though if there there is maybe a 10 man version of this quest as well that yields 5 badges. Not all guilds have 25 raiders. But maybe they plan to use this to encourage the Cross server LFG tool.
