This was originally a comment for Elleiras’s post on PvE to PvP transfers, but it got to be pretty long and crazy, so I decided to repost it here as its own topic.
While I’m taking my short vacation with Rhii, I somehow didn’t feel like leveling a lowbie. So I decided to play around a bit more with my DK, Avaani, that I rolled on Aurdon and Adreanna’s server a while back. They play on a PvP server, and (as has come up in the recent past) I’ve only just begun to see the appeal of world PvP at all. They’ve told me repeatedly that the random killings and slayings on their server aren’t too bad.
I beg to differ.
From about the instant I logged on, I was being killed everywhere I went. Now maybe it’s got something to do with the fact that I’m horrid at PvP to begin with, maybe it’s because I’m very unfamiliar with how to play a DK at all. But I couldn’t kill ANYONE.
I don’t think there’s a class in the game that didn’t get at least one killing blow on me. Oh yes, Holy Priests were represented too. I would go to an area, kill a mob or two for whatever quest I was (vainly) trying to complete, and then I would get killed and camped for 20 minutes. Frustrated, I would res at the spirit healer and go farm ore in Tirisfal for a while until my res sickness wore off. Then I’d go to a different area, kill a mob or two for a different quest and the whole thing would begin all over again.
I must have gotten a reputation for being an easy kill, too, because I was literally followed all over Hellfire by a stealth-kitty druid and his roguely companion. No matter where I went, those two popped up from literally nowhere and knifed me in the back. It got so when I saw them materialize (or rather, found myself stunned for no good reason), I’d just stand there and let them get it over with quickly. At least it took up less of my time that way.
On at least two occasions I logged off and didn’t come back for 40 minutes to an hour. When I logged back on my friends were right there, waiting to spring out of the shadows somewhere and make me dead all over again.
It was horrible. Awful. Intolerable.
If it happens the next time I log in with her, it will be the last time I log in on Kel’Thuzad. That is not fun, and I can’t and won’t deal with it.

I played for a short time on a PvP server. I was horrendously ganked and camped. The 2 that wouldn’t leave me alone actually kept one camping at my corpse and the other at the graveyard. I had no where to go EXCEPT offline.
Then I played for over a year on an RP-PvP server. That was much more tolerable and could actually be fun. Of course, I had to learn which areas were gank hotspots and stay away from them… but otherwise it was much different than the regular PvP server. I mean, that one had people waiting for me to emerge from my “safe” starting zone. =/ So I feel ya on that one.
The one thing that was fun on the RP-PvP server… after I had 1 high level character, she was used to exact revenge on those that would repeatedly gank and/or camp my alt. The trick to keeping most of them easy to find: log out as a ghost after they killed me at least twice.
They’d stay and watch and still see my corpse. I’d ride up and whack ‘em, leaving their rotting corpses near my alt. Then… sometimes I’d check the whole zone and kill anyone I could just to send a message… don’t eff with the lowbie of the same guild tag.
Although, some of those things did lead to me being on KOS orders, but we had a list of those too (whole guilds even).

I think this post may have been a *minor* overreaction on my part. I must have logged in on a bad day, or caught the attention of a few particularly spiteful people. I’ve played Avaani pretty successfully a few times since then and haven’t had more than the few PvP deaths I was initially expecting. There was even an instance where another DK plowed through me like I was barely there, got the honorable kill achievement, and then bowed to me and kept questing in the same general area without showing the least bit of interest in killing me again.
Despite the previous experience (which was so obnoxious as to actually give me recurring PvP ganking nightmares) I am still giving Avaani a chance.

I never really liked WoW’s FFA PvP system. It just seemed to encourage ganking. Maybe it’s got something to do with the player base but it just seems very unfun and unfair.
I’d love to see a WoW PvP server that had a similar system to EQ2′s PvP server i.e. level restrictions on who you could attack. This would mean you actually get some fair fights and aren’t just camped by level 80s constantly.

Looks like you have the reverse problem that I had. Lower horde population than alliance, I ran on a lower ally pop server for a while, and hellfire was just like this in reverse, Honor hold used to get owned and it was suicide flying into there. I like world PVP when it is a challenge to both parties and they are not in the middle of a quest or something.
Last night going for into the nether achievement , My wife and I scared a horde druid and DK, They were 68 and we were 80. We never killed them just let them keep questing.
Also the one time kill I understand the camping and ongoing killing, really is it fun? Mostly I think they are just bored and looking for something to do, so they grief you.

It is likely because you are a DK.
DKs have a permanent KOS sign taped to their back on most PVP servers. Its like lowbie rogues used to be.
