New direction! When we last left off (over 2 weeks ago) I stated that I’d break this into a Armor post and then a Weapon post. I’ve decided to instead group this by level since that might be more helpful.
I’ve gathered all the data already and during that long drawn out process I realized that I was putting waaaaaaaaaaay too much effort into this. As I pointed out in my starting post to this Death Knight Outland Gear Guide, I’m pulling item data down from Wowhead and deciding its worth based on the following criteria:
- Can a Death Knight us it?
- Is it DPS Weapons and Armor? (using Wowhead’s Warrior DPS weighted scale)?
- Can you gain this gear between the levels of 58 and 67? (by 68 you’re moving on to Northrend)
- Do you gain this gear by questing, instances, or buying/crafting?
So equipped with that knowledge, I was pulling up theoretical combinations that are very unlikely to happen. Such as some quest gear being toppled only by a small margin by some piece of instance gear. This resulted in gear ending up in my list that are very unlikely to be used. So to streamline this, I’m skipping over some “slight” upgrades to move ahead to upgrades that will make a difference. Honestly I realized by the end of this there will be more or less one gear path to level 67 with a few minor variations depending on your situation.
Armor is easy enough but when it comes to weapons you have a few options. Death Knights can wield Axes, Swords, Polearms and if you train you can also use Maces. Horde can train this in Thunder Bluff with Ansekhwa where Alliance can go see Buliwyf in Ironforge or Handiir in Exodar. The choice is up to you if you plan on duel wielding or using a 2H. Blood-Caked Blade in the Unholy tree lends its self more towards a duel wielding approach where as Two-handed weapon specialization in the Blood tree obviously is figures you’ll be using a 2H. That is not to say that if you spec heavy in those trees you even have to take those talents. I just felt I should point it out.
Immediately start grabbing quests. All you see. Your quest log should be clean so you’ll have room. Now this guide covers what quests to hit to get to the new gear but you are more then likely going to be able to finish a few quests while heading to ones within this guide.
–Level 58–
Chest - You can pick up the Protectorate Breastplate by completing the Missions to shut down the Murketh and Saadraz Gateways. Horde has a questline to run through first but it starts from the moment you walk through the portal so you should be well on your way already. The alliance quest only requires you to be 58 and talk to Forward Commander Kingston. This is the easy solo quest chest. The real upgrade is the Battlemaster’s Breastplate ! This one will take you all the way to Northrend! You get it from the end of a quest chain. The mission is suggested to be a 3 Man quest but capable Death Knights could probably pull it off with 2. Alliance start this chain off with The Exorcism of Colonel Jules and the Horde will have to jump through a few more hoops starting with Boiling Blood.
Hands - Horde get the upper hand here (get it?) with the Sunstrider’s Gauntlets. Sorry Alliance, better luck next time. Finish off the quest Watned: Blacktalon the Savage at Falcon Watch to pick these up. It’s a 2 man quest but with skill you could probably solo at 58.
Cloak - Vindicator’s Cloak is another Horde only upgrade that comes from an easy solo quest. Zeth’Gor Must Burn!
Trinket - Bladefist’s Breadth is still a very nice trinket to this day. I remember when TBC came out how every level 60 ran straight for this quest because it was just as good if not better then Tier 2 Trinkets. All you have to do is get enough firepower (suggested 3 man) to take down Overlord or Cruel’s Intentions.
Feet - Expedition Footgear will take you into Zangarmarsh to get. All you have to do is kill the Leader of the Bloodscale. This 2 man quest is available to both factions.
Shoulders - Expedition Mantle will go nicely with your new shoes. You get these from killing the Leader of the Darkcrest in Zangarmarsh.
–Level 59–
Cloak - Watcher’s Cloak of Vigilance is going to be slightly better then the Vindicator’s Cloak and it is available to both factions after you complete the Drain Schematics quest in Zangarmarsh. As alliance I would take this…as Horde…read about the level 59 ring. If your into the instance running, the Perfectly Balanced Cape should be on your checklist. This is the reward for completing the Heart of Rage quest in The Blood Furnace which is part two of the Hellfire Citadel quest chain.
Rings - The Warden’s Ring of Precision is an upgrade over both of your rings and is acquired from the same Drain Schematics quest. You’ll have to decide which is better for you. As a horde I plan on grabbing the ring and replacing Valanar’s Signet Ring with it.
Shoulders - Jade Warrior Pauldrons are a fine upgrade for those who are running through instances. You get these for completing the Weaken the Ramparts quests which kick off at level 59.
OK! Well thats all the gear that you should be concerned about at levels 58 and 59. I know many Death Knights will be past this point by the time I post this but I will continue this series until we’ve hit 67 so keep on checking back!

Wow Aurdon, thanks for taking the time to gather this wonderful info and post it! This is great!!
Np at all. This was originally something that I was just doing for myself and decided it'd be a good thing to share with the community. Glad you like it.
THIS IS NOT HELPFUL AT ALL
you do the DK quests and its better than this bullshit and shorter
the standard DK quest take you just beyond level 58…so I have to ask what DK quest are you talking about? Did you have difficulty in DK land with the quests? Grind too long on those mobs? If you know how to "do the DK quests" all the way to level 68 please let me know and I'll update the guide bro.
Thanks for the insight.
