Goodbye WoW

by on October 29, 2008

I almost had to say that for good.  A few of you people may have noticed how posts have been trailing off lately.  I AM NOT LEAVING.  Nor am I quitting the game.  But for a moment I almost thought I’d have to.

Past few weeks have been hectic due to our family moving to a new house.  This house is going to be one of the first in a newly built subdivision and after calling around I’ve discovered my cable Internet provider does not lay their lines in a new subdivision until 80% of the houses have been sold.  Judging by the last time I drove through… I’m guessing they are around the 10% mark. =(  So I see that the phone provider for the new subdivision offers DSL.  I look up on their website and even find my street address in their system! So far I haven’t found my street address anywhere since the roads are so new.  This was a good sign.  Until their website loaded the screen saying it is not available.  /sadpanda.

I sat back and though about life without WoW, without online games…heck with out even Internet period.  So I started to scheme.  I work at a tech company and I’m on the computer all day (its where I get most my posting done =)), so I shouldn’t really be “without” connection.  I can still read up on WoW stuff and try to make my blog better by tapping a bit more into the news of WoW.  I could still twitter and BA chat with friends to keep a pulse on the game until High Speed moves into the area.  Most importantly I can spend more time with Family.  The normal routine as it stands now is come home, eat dinner, hang out for an hour and put the kids to bed.  Then its Raid till Midnight.  That’s every Monday-Thursday.  Sometimes I end up raiding Friday-Sunday as well because my guild is pushing hard in Sunwell (Felmist down!) to try and get as far as we can pre-Wrath.  I actually kind of thought this might be not so bad after all.  Life does exist outside of WoW after all doesn’t it?  …Well my wife said I’d be devastated anyway…thanks for the faith hun =).

Not all is lost however.  We use Vonage as our VoIP phone and not having Internet was going to put a damper on that.  So I had to call the phone company one way or another.  While I was on the phone I brought up the question of why my street address is in their system already but it still says no DSL.  This didn’t make much since to me because DSL is running on the telephone lines they have already laid (not the fiber optic cable that my current provider claimed they’d have to run for cable Internet).  Also the new sub division lies between to other we established areas so there should be a DSL hub somewhere near by.  After some checking the nice lady said yes their website data is out of date and DSL is available!  WOOT!  So by 11/3 I should have 1.5Mbps DSL and be back online.  I think now I have a 3Mbps line so I don’t think things will suffer that much.  Do any of you guys play on a 1.5Mbps connect?  Any issues?

So things will still be delayed in posting…but I hope to get back in the saddle again soon and keep posting more stories for everyone.  I promise I haven’t died and if the blog were to be put on Cryo-freeze status…I’d be sure to post about it and not just disappear.

Life does exist outside of WoW. I went about a month and a half without playing and enjoyed myself. School and activities took up much of my time, and I barely even had time to check up on WoW news, just a weekly peek at WoW Insider. So go enjoy yourself! But you know what they always say: People never really leave. :)

@loronar Tell me about it… My reader was at 650 this morning. Whittled it down to 500 something so far. Can’t even imagine trying to keep up with twitter during this time.

We all need to step away once in awhile, heck, sometimes the unplanned WoW removals end up being better for you anyway.

I know you’ll be back though, no one can leave forever…

I run fine on the 1.5Mbps. Even with two computers playing Wow at the same time, I generally still have a very low latency. It just kind of sucks at patch time.

I was on 1.5 untill recently (upgraded to 2.5). Didn’t have any problems back then and latency didn’t change.

In case you’re curious the upgrade to 2.5 was not WoW related.

I saw the title, and had a little freak out. Thank god.

And what it is this “life outside of WoW” stuff you guys keep talking about? What is that?

now you don’t have to deal with that pesky family that was creeping up on you…

You’ll run fine with 1.5Mbps just don’t do too many things at once =P

When I had to make the 4 day drive to relocate, look for a place to stay for a week, then another week for the cable company … it was so sweet logging in and running around on top of Org mindlessly.

@all excellent news all around! glad to hear nobody has issues with 1.5Mbs..I didn’t think I would but you never know. Might put a damper on multiboxing though I suppose.

And yes I wrote that title to grab attention :) I’m flattered at hearing how many people would actually miss this blog. <3 U Guys

So this is my last post/comment for a few more days. I should be back up and running Monday evening (providing UPS delivers on time). See you guys on the flip side!
