Happy Birthday from Blizzard

by on August 12, 2008

So today is Fimlys Birthday. He’s the creative brains behind Asleep at the WoW and a conspirator for all that is Twisted Nether. Bre over at Gun Lovin’ Dwarf Chick wished him a happy birthday with video as well. This got me to thinking, why isn’t Blizzard celebrating this as well? Not just Fim’s B-Day but all players. It’d be a simple thing to implement. You could go off of the Birthday listed on the account or even better yet…your character’s brithday! Blizzard is sure to track that kind of data. They have to know the day that character first set foot on Azeroth soil. So why can’t you log in and recieve a Delicious Chocolate Cake in the mail and a tiny gift of sorts? In other MMO’s (such as Star Wars Galaxies) you get “vetern rewards” that basiclly are an ingame decoration to show how long you’ve had your account. I think it would be great if Blizzard would even take it to a level where you could create a “wish list” of a set of available birthday gifts and on your Birthday you would be randomly rewarded one of them. This would emulate what it would be like if you were to ask for something for your birthday…sometimes you get what you want, sometimes you don’t. This could even strech over to the Feast of Winter Veil event as well. Ask for the Snomaster 9000 that you didn’t get last year!

What item would you love to see on your Birthday from Blizzard? (beta keys and full sets of epic are unlikely so lets keep the wish list at “non-game-changing-tcg-loot-card-style-items :P )

–Edit–

Another idea….how bout a party hat you can wear!  And the Cake could be a item that could set up like a table with balloons on it as well…kinda like the D.I.S.C.O. Ball!  And everyone can click on the cake and get a slice!  Will dissapear after 24h or perhaps a week.  What great RP opportunity!  Could even celebrate reaching level cap this way as well. OH man I’m going to be more and more disappointed if this stuff isn’t added.

Wonderful idea! I want pets, especially since they’re making it a spell. A murloc pet would be a good start.

@Larísa yeah! A great gift might be a ticket for a hard (or impossible) to get item that’s already in the game. Not too unique though. We don’t want the Blizzcon peeps QQing that their Items are no longer unique. Maybe just a pallet shifted version of whats already available so you can still set yourself apart.

I like the cake idea. With 10 pieces, each when eaten give +10 to all stats (not stackable).

It would also be nice to get a birthday hat and a bag of confetti. The bag of confetti could be on a 1 minute timer that you use by targeting an area and it rains down confetti for 15 seconds. The bag and hat would expire after one day of being used/equipted.

Another possibly game breaking idea would be to give a player an item called a ‘birthday coupon’ which can only be used in an instance and when used the next boss to die (in addition to what they would normally drop, you also get an item put directly into your bag of a type you can wear).

So strategically, you do a raid and wait to use the coupon (which puts a buff on you) until during or right before the boss you want loot from, and either hope or plan that something on his loot table is what you want.

@FaceRoll Very interesting ideas…your coupon idea got me to think about something I think I heard mentioned about in Diablo 3…loot that only you see. Basic concept is any loot that comes off a mob on your screen is only obtainable by you…which means you don’t have to spam click to grab that Uber Epic that just dropped. It gives you time to shift inventory around and pick it up when ready. We’ve also seen some of this in TBC where only crafters can see if their crafting pattern dropped off of a mob. That way nobody else benefits from roll hax.

Since this (i think) is being brought to D3, and WoW has the “pattern blindness” already implemented…I wonder if we might see some more “individual” loot sometime in the future of WoW.

That’s such a point!! It’s about time someone stepped up to the plate like that. I am going to link to you in my blog roll, ok?
