Wrath of the Lich King Achievements: WoW

I say WoW as in both World of Warcraft and as a word of exclamation of surprise, wonder, pleasure, or the like.

Achievements have been rumored (read: linked screenshots) to make an appearance in Wrath of the Lich King but it wasn’t until today that Blizzard Officialized it by posting it on their website. What surprised me about this revelation is how the “World of Warcraft’s achievements system will launch with more than 500 individual achievements” and “The list is easily expandable, so you can expect additional achievements with each new World of Warcraft content update.”

…Woah

So here we have the most played game in the entire world (approaching 11mil subscriptions), its MMO so never ends, it encourages players to log in often and take part in multiple seasonal events to collect, and scratch off pets from conventions….and now this. I’m wondering if someone with an addictive personality can legally sue at this point. Completionists are screwed to forever give up any kind of relationship they have outside of the game. Some of these obscure Achievements will obviously take forever. Never mind the Feats of Strength. Feats of Strength are where we’re going to see our past titles be forever immortalized so almost anything you’ve done worth bragging about pre Wrath of the Lich King should be in there. Wonder if there will be a Feat of Strength for taking out Kel’thuzad pre TBC and an achievement for doing it in Wrath of the Lich King. Back to some of these achievements though…

  • Dungeons and Raids: Every end boss of every raid and dungeon in the game grants its own achievement. Future achievements in this category may include ones for completing a run without any player deaths, with fewer than the maximum number of players, or within a certain time limit.

Ok there is one that I don’t see happening for every player. A lot of players don’t even see some bosses. And only a handful people have ever soloed bosses or beaten Molten Core in less then an hour.

I guess this post came about because I do try for completions. I do try and finish everything there is to a game and this announcement was more or less a blow of reality that you just can’t do that in MMOs. In other games where they have used an achievement system, things seem to quickly balloon out of control with weird random obscure achievements to gain with no way of doing so without setting up an achievement box style of play….

…anyway I’m rambling now. Do you guys even care about achievements?

well, if you really wanted to be a completionist in the most technical sense, there is probably an aspect where you have to possess every item in existence, and with bank space, that simply isn’t possible. you have to pick and choose, and the ones that you do choose are the ones you end up showing off to your online buddies in the e-peen fashion.

so really, i suppose it’s impossible to be a true completionist. those who are end up playing rpgs that don’t have regular patches (final fantasy, anyone?)

LOL I think FFVII is where I first found the meaning of completionist. Play through once how you want. Second time collect every piece of armor at every city and level up all Matera to max. Final fantasy games seem to encourage that (can’t get the special ending unless you get 100% right?)

I’m just hoping they don’t go too crazy with these and dangle prizes in front of those who feel they gotta do these kinds of quests to accomplish something. Giving out 10 /hugs is one thing. Defeating Arthas 25 man without any members dying will be another.

I’m excited to see more and more surprises of WoW. I read a similar post on http://www.wrathking.com. It keeps on getting better.
