Know when to fold em’

For me it has never been an easy decision to leave a guild. In my WoW lifetime I’ve been in four guilds and two of them twice. It makes it a pretty easy move when a guild just falls apart or merges with another but what about when you have to decide that a guild “just isn’t right for you”.

I’ve had to do that twice now. Once when The Burning Crusade came out, and once about 3 months ago. In the first instance I got caught up in “My friends are coming back because of the expansion and we’re reforming my old guild…its not you ….its me”. The second time was more of a “You guys are pricks…./spit”. We we’re doing T5 content after the Hijal and BT had been opened for all. We also refused to “jump ahead” and wanted to finish off Vash/Kael. There were two groups in this guild really. My old smaller guild (the reformed friends guild) merged into them so we had our circle of friends and they had theirs. They would invite some of my old guild to raids but not all. I was always overlooked when the Raid leader was choosing the lineup. Even when I was next in line on the Wait list they would pick someone that wasn’t even on the list that was their friend (and less geared then me). Because of this clique I decided it was not worth my time staying in that guild friends or not. I didn’t even get to raid with my friends so there wasn’t any point.

I moved on to another guild that was close to the same progression level but considered themselves less casual. I’ve never questioned my choice. In my new guild we may get yelled at a lot when someone “stands in the fire” but I’ve got lots of shiny purples to show for it. Now when I /who my last guild they barely even have 15 people on at a time. People got tired of casual raiders filling raid spots and no progression ever happened. Now I believe that guild is doing ZA at best.

Every now and then in my current raiding guild we’d have a spot to fill and open up for pugs. I would always dip into my friends list and slowly but surely we’ve gotten them to drink the koolaid. Last nights raid consisted of 3 of my old buddies (from the reformed friends guild) all of which were sporting my guild’s tag.

I guess the reason I’m posting this is to say that you have to decide whats best for you and your enjoyment of the game. It’s a great game and we all love it so don’t let your current situation ruin it. I decided to move onto greener pastures instead of wondering why I even bother logging in.

Thanks again for the encouragement, Aurdon! I’ve been doing some thinking, and I may just take a leap of faith and see what’s out there. I have this tendency, even in life, to become attached to things. Not good for me. >.<

You bet. Let me know how things turn out with whatever you decide to do.

I recently made a similar choice (though with complications), and left a casual raiding guild for a more hardcore one. Whatever can be said for raiding guilds being less friendly and helpful is in many ways not true, there is as much camaraderie in a raiding guild as in a community or casual one, the difference is in the focus, and to an extent the level of shouting on vent, in many ways its actually lower in raiding guild since people are expected to know what to do, and yes you will get flamed for letting constructs into the raid, but if its your first times people accept that as part of doing business, they need you to learn and you need to learn, the failure to learn is where a raiding guild differs from a casual one as casual guilds tend not to kick under achievers.

I don’t know if moving guilds is the right thing to do, in someways it does feel like skipping parts of progression and setting back your previous guild, but its often something you need to do, if you don’t your own happiness suffers and the risk of burnout and simply losing the fun increases.
